Carnaval is probably the most popular celebration in Bahia. People greatly enjoy it and go nuts, but the one in Salvador, which I photographed twice, is very dangerous and too expensive considering that hotels skyrocket their prices. I’ve also photographed the carnival in the beautiful Bahian countryside where I’ve been photographing for years. There, the celebrations continue to be simpler and much more fun and the music doesn’t burst out your eardrums. The smaller crowds seem to enjoy this weeklong revels so much especially the children and everybody continues to wear traditional costumes.
After several students asking me to teach me a Carnival workshop, I’ve finally decided to do so.
Needless to say, besides photographing the weekly celebrations in various villages in the Reconcavo Bahiano, we will continue to explore the beautiful rural region, which I’ve have been delving with my students for years. The more we do it, the more we get to know families that are becoming our friends, which is priceless, because our images become more and more intimate and personal. It brings me back to the countryside of Al Campo with my friends Inesita, Ofelio, Miguel, Juan Margarita and Fidel when taking pictures was simply part of a ritual. Here it’s becoming to be the same way and it feels great!
It will be once-in-a-lifetime opportunity not to be missed because I’ll only be teaching it this year. Get ready to dance till you drop while taking special pictures of life in its myriad forms!
